Some good news today (Friday) for those making minimum wage.
You get a bit of a pay bump as the minimum wage has gone up 10 cents to $14.35.
There are also wage increases for students, liquor servers, and hunting and fishing guides.
The province says the hike is tied to the Consumer Price Index.
Meantime, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath isn’t impressed with the 10-cent change to Ontario’s minimum wage.
She says Premier Doug Ford is insulting workers with an 80-cent per day increase, before taxes.
Horwath notes he called them heroes during the pandemic, but isn’t behind them now.
She says minimum wage workers have seen the cost of living skyrocket past their wages, and every month have to make tough decisions around paying rent, affording medicine and putting food on the table.
Horwath adds the NDP committed to a $15 livable wage tied to inflation back in April 2016, and we should be well past that benchmark now.
She stresses, “No one who works full time should be struggling to make ends meet or living in poverty, all workers in Ontario deserve to receive a decent wage that let’s them build their lives in our great province.”
