Education and Reconciliation is the focus this week in communities across the northwest including Sioux Lookout.
The Municipal Truth and Reconciliation Committee is hosting a series of events including the Orange Shirt Day Walk Wednesday.
Committee Chair Darlene Angeconeb says, “It will start at 9:45 am and we’ll walk from the Frog Rapids Bridge into town. Last year there were 100 people and then there will be a barbeque which is hosted by the Rotary Club.”
That will be held at the Travel Information Centre.
Participants are encouraged to bring copies of photographs of loved ones, stories and poems.
In a statement the Committee states, “Orange Shirt Day recognizes the harm to generations of children by the Indian Residential School and is an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that Every Child Matters. Orange Shirt Day recognizes our commitment to reconciliation, anti-racism and anti-bullying.”
Angeconeb stresses this is one of many events planned as there will be a special ceremony on Thursday, September 30.
“Flag raising to honour the children who didn’t make it home from residential schools. Garnet Angeconeb received a flag and Mayor Doug Lawrance, Council and members of the Municipal Truth and Reconciliation Committee will take part in a flag raising at 2:15 pm.
It’s also being held at the Travel Information Centre.
Events started September 23 with the “Take Back the Night” Walk and the Education Week ends October 4.
Angeconeb adds, “We hope you can come out and learn something or take something away that you never knew before.”
