In a hard hitting affair in Fort Frances Friday, the Dryden Eagles managed a 20-8 victory over the host Muskies.
The Eagles got out to a quick start with two touchdowns in the first quarter. Dom Morriseau hauled in a Peter Zilkalns pass from 23 yards out to get on the board and Zilkalns later ran in one himself from the three yard line. Shalom Powell plunged in with a 2 point conversion after the second major.
Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the second frame, the defenses both played physical football and limited drives. Mixing the run and pass, DHS closed in on the Muskie end zone in the 3rd quarter and it was Powell who scored his first career major on the ensuing play. After failing on the convert attempt, the guests led 20-0. Fort Frances battled throughout and slowly gained the field possession advantage, this resulted in a rushing touchdown and 2 point conversion of their own. Time ran out on the comeback as the Eagles ran to the ball and made the Muskies work for their gains.
Fynn Livingston, Cale Wright, Mike Kusano and Carter McKinstry stood out as Eagle defenders and Karson Bibeau added and interception to halt a Muskie drive.
The team now has a bye week while the Muskies travel to Kenora to face the Broncos.
The next action for the Blue and Gold will be at home on October 1 at 4:00pm when the Beaver Brae squad visits.
