A group of four, with an average age of 65, is travelling 10,000 kilometres on bike across Canada.
The Cycling 4 Water ‘Sea 2 Sea 2 Sea’ campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for 65 life-giving wells in Africa, in partnership with Global Aid Network.
Robert Montgomery and his team have reached northwestern Ontario and says support from area communities has been overwhelming.
“We have 40 wells either completely paid for or pledged and we’re trusting that there will be another 25 added to that before we reach the end or close to the time, we reach the end of our trip.”
He notes each well costs, including training and other requirements, is $8,500.
Montgomery says that means $8.50 gives water for life for one person.
Montgomery says they decided to embark on the trip because everyone deserves clean drinking water, and they have all seen first-hand the struggles African communities are going through.
He stresses around every 90 seconds one child dies from a water-related disease somewhere in the world.
