Kenora’s Gabe Mastromatteo will start his Olympic journey later this week.
Mastromatteo will be taking part in three events.
The 19-year-old will swim his first event at the Tokyo Olympic Games, the 100m breaststroke, Saturday starting at 5:00 am CST.
The 100m breaststroke will be an incredibly difficult challenge for Mastromatteo as the field of competitors includes defending Olympic champion Adam Peaty.
The 26-year-old from Great Britain currently holds both the Olympic and world record times in the event.
Gabe will continue his quest for gold next Thursday (July 29th) in the 4 x 100m mixed medley relay before taking part in the 4 x 100m men’s medley relay next Friday (July 30th).
Mastromatteo was named to the Canadian Olympic Team on June 24th. He had a strong showing at the Swim Canada Olympic Trials, winning the 100m breaststroke and finishing ninth in the 200m breaststroke.
He currently races for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
