The NDP calls it a national crime that deserves further investigation.
They are responding to the recent discovery of gravesites around former residential schools with a call for an independent investigator.
Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says they should have the power to access documents from the government and churches related to staff who worked at the schools.
“Because the days of protecting and giving privacy to these perpetrators are over,” states Angus.
“The days of protecting their privileges are done with.”
Nunavut MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq says it’s time the government treated what happened at the schools as a national crime.
“The map of Canada is covered with crime scenes. The unmarked graves that have shocked Canadians are just the tip of the iceberg.”
The NDP also wants the investigator to have the power to lay charges
