A historic moment for the Assembly of First Nations.
For the first time, a woman has been elected National Chief.
RoseAnne Archibald, the former Deputy Chief of the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation and former Ontario Regional Chief, was the last candidate standing after her opponent Reginald Bellerose opted not to continue after five rounds of voting.
“The AFN has made “herstory” today,” exclaims Archibald.
“The chiefs have made history and herstory. You have made history and herstory. It’s time for change on so many levels.”
Archibald says she plans to represent the AFN with humility.
“So honored to be a part of this difference and today to make a difference for this organization moving forward.”
Archibald says her main goal will be to kick colonial policy to the curb.
