There were 12 new forest fires in the northwest region Sunday but officials warn additional reports are being investigated.
All are small and not threatening at this time.
There were 3 each in the Sioux Lookout and Red Lake Districts, 2 each in the Dryden and Fort Frances regions, with one in Kenora and one in Thunder Bay.
There are 33 active fires in the region and 12 are considered not under control.
Ten are being observed, 8 are under control and 3 are being held.
The fire hazard is mainly moderate to high with areas of extreme in the Red Lake and Kenora districts.
Fire crews are making good progress on a large blaze 3 kilometres northwest of Naitcatchewenin First Nation.
Fire behaviour was minimal Sunday thanks to high humidity, low wind and cloud cover.
Some 20 crews have now been able to lay hose line around its perimeter to prevent the fire from spreading further.
It’s now listed at 407 hectares.
Roughly 86 residents have voluntarily evacuated due to smoke.
Most are staying at a motel in Fort Frances.
The other fire of concern is about 88 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout.
The blaze has grown to 1,412 hectares in size.
It was active Sunday and required air attack.
Crews are working to establish a fire line in strategic areas and are also establishing hoselines.
More help is expected to enter the area in the coming days.
