Elsie Maltais October 03 1933 June 17 2021
In loving memory of Eloise Elsie Maltais (Dayholos), age 87 years, who passed away peacefully Thursday June 17th, 2021 at 3:33 pm in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with her family at her side. The family would like to thank Dr. Davenport and the ICU staff for their kindness towards our mother and towards us during this time.
Elsie is survived by her children Désirée Maltais (Bobby Fielding) and Stephen (Michelle) Maltais, granddaughters Sadie and Lily, sisters Mary and Joy as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roland and her brother Michael.
Elsie was born and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she did well in school. As a young woman she worked at Standard Brands as comptometer operator, a comptometer being a keyboard driven mechanical calculator. She loved numbers. Elsie also loved singing and was part of a community choir.
In 1956 she met Roland Maltais on a blind date. Two years later they were married and Elsie moved to Dryden, Ontario. In the early 1960’s they built their home, where they raised their two children and lived for the rest of their lives.
In the 1970’s Elsie tree-planted each spring. She loved working outside with the other “girls”. In the 1980’s Elsie started volunteering in the Dryden Hospital. She enjoyed reading to the older patients and bringing them refreshments.
Elsie was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and sang in the choir. When she could no longer attend Mass, Father Al’s visits to her home were greatly appreciated. She recently received her pin commemorating 50 years as a member of the Catholic Women’s League. She was proud of her pin!
In her later years Elsie was able to stay in her own home thanks to the support of many people, of note her nephew Dan Maltais, and her friends Roxanna and Rick Groves and Tom Riley.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate Elsie’s life will be held Tuesday June 22nd at 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Reverend Alan Campeau officiating. Interment will be in the Dryden Cemetery.
Masks are mandatory and social distancing will be observed, limited seating available.
If friends desire donations may be made to the Samaritan’s Purse through the Stevens Funeral Homes P.O. Box 412, Dryden ON P8N 2Z1. This was one of Elsie’s favorite charities. Condolences may be posted on Stevens Funeral Homes Facebook page or at www.stevensfuneralhomes.ca
