The Northwestern Health Unit has expanded second dose eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine.
Starting today, Wednesday June 16, anyone over the age of 18 can now get their second Moderna of Pfizer vaccine 28 days after their first shot
“While we wait for the provincial booking system to increase eligibility, individuals can use the Northwestern Health Unit booking system on our booking web page to book an appointment online or they can choose to attend a walk in clinic,” explains Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon.
The local booking system is available at Health Unit Vaccine Booking Clinic
As for those who received the Astra Zeneca vaccine, the region’s top doctor provides further information.
“Anyone who had Astra Zeneca for their first dose, can now get a second dose of an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) at an eight to 12 week interval,” said Dr. Young Hoon. “It should be recognized that while waiting twelve weeks helps to ultimately provide more protection, some may choose to receive their second dose sooner to have increased protection provided by a second dose earlier.”
Dr. Young Hoon notes some Astra Zeneca may be available at area pharmacies as well or residents can book their second doses at one of their clinics through the online provincial booking system, phoning the provincial call centre or attending a walk in clinic.
The health unit suggests to avoid waiting in a long line at a walk in clinic to book an appointment ahead of time if you are able to do so.
People currently able to book an appointment include:
Dose 1: Anyone aged 12 or older
Book at www.ontario.ca/bookvaccine or through the NWHU Booking Site.
Dose 2:
• Anyone aged 18 and older who had their first dose of an mRNA vaccine at least 28 days ago
• Anyone who had AstraZeneca as a first dose at least 56 days (8 weeks) ago
Book through the NWHU booking site or by calling 1-866-468-2240 or attend as a walk-in, where available.
Local health officials ask the public to disregard previously booked second dose appointments that were scheduled at the time of booking their first dose.
These individuals should book an earlier appointment or attend a walk-in clinic.
