The MPP for the Kiiwetinoong Riding says there has to be a change in which first nations are consulted.
Sol Mamakwa says the province doesn’t just have to talk to indigenous leaders, they have to let them lead the process.
“I think we need to bring back really fundamental changes within the system,” states Mamakwa.
“No just funding. Not just programs. Not just services. It’s more than that. We need to start looking at self-determination. We need to start looking at self-governance.”
He says the Ford government is full of platitudes, but there’s little real action.
“There has to be an acknowledgement of treaties and respecting of treaties, and that’s not happening with this government. As you know, over the last three years, they have pulled back a lot of funding when we talk about indigenous programming.”
Mamakwa made his comments in a year-end interview on the the current sitting of the Ontario Legislature.
