A couple of projects are being carried out to try to get more indigenous students interested in the health sciences.
Science North and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine have signed a three year agreement.
Emily Kerton is a senior scientist at Science North and says have kits they are sending out to students who are between the ages of 8 and 13.
“The kits have everything in them that they need in order to do the actively by themselves as well as an instruction sheet,” says Kerton.
“So if they are not able to connect through video, they have all the tools at hand to be able to do the activity.”
Kerton says they also have just completed Science Days with students at indigenous run high schools in northern Ontario.
She says it helps them decide if the health science are for them.
“Is science something I want to go into, more specifically health sciences. Then we have a NOSM representative who comes into the program on the screen right now, because it is virtual, and talks about the kind of things NOSM has to offer.”
She says they currently have funding for the program for three years as well.
