The Northwestern Health Unit is giving its blessing to open local schools again.
The Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says in their experience there hasn’t been any transmission of COVID-19 in the classroom.
“We have made it the recommendation to the Chief Medical of Health that schools in the Northwestern Health Unit catchment area can be reopened this school year if they felt it was appropriate,” says Dr. Young Hoon.
She adds while there have been a number of cases in area classrooms, there hasn’t been any spread.
“So there are a number of public health requirements for schools and up to now that general evidence, plus our experience in the Northwestern Health Unit does show those public health measures have reduced transmission of COVID-19 in schools.”
This past Friday was the deadline for comment on whether schools in Ontario should open again this year and it’s up to the province to decide which, if any schools, can reopen.
