The union head at Thunder Bay’s Alstom plant is longing for the day when he can call his workers back.
The recent 60 street car order for the Toronto Transit Commission, and future potential contracts, has Dominic Pasqualino hoping for the return of some of the former 800 Unifor employees.
“Right now there’s probably about 300, and that includes Unifor, and management, and other unions; Mind you, some of those have gone to other places or moved away,” said Pasqualino.
For the time being, many workers will remain laid off from the plant.
Pasqualino adds other potential contracts mean lines within the plant could fire up in a few years, lasting for decades.
“212 bi-level refurbishment cars, and hopefully we’ll get a large order of subway cars…and the subway cars they’re talking over 400.”
Pasqualino also says Hamilton’s LRT could lead to future contracts.
