Members of the Dryden Regional Health Centre Ontario Nurses Association are donating a thousand dollars to Feed Ontario in honour of National Nurses Week.
The need for food security has increased exponentially across the province during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I know families have been struggling this past year,” said Angie Barr, Registered Nurse and Bargaining Unit President for ONA at DRHC. “The pandemic has put a lot of pressures financially and socially on so many people, who may not have experienced these struggles in the past and I think that it’s really important to help out locally and wherever the need is in Ontario.”
The theme of Nurses week this year is ‘Still Standing, Still Strong and Still Pound’ and Barr says she’s proud of the work her DRHC family has done over the past year.
“It’s been hard and I think that we’ve shown a great support for each other and I want everyone to remember to keep supporting each other, being there for each and lifting each other up on a daily basis. It’s not easy and I don’t see it getting foreseeably easier in the near future, but we will get through this.”
The ONA Board of Directors is also matching the DRHC Union’s donation, for a combined total of two thousand dollars.
“Feed Ontario looks at all food banks across the province and they distribute monetary as well as predict whatever food bank happens to be in need so this is a good initiative because it won’t just touch here in Dryden but across Ontario, where our 68 thousand members are for the Ontario Nurses Association,” said Dawn Armstrong, Region One Vice President for ONA.
Armstrong hopes all nurses take some time for themselves this week and celebrate the proud profession they choose to do every day.
