The opening of the walleye season in northwestern Ontario is Saturday, the earliest its been in eight years.
Gord Pyzer is the fishing editor with Outdoors Canada and says with the ice out so early this year, the quick start to the season is promising.
Pyzer says, “I think the way things are shaping up, the bite will be spectacular!”
He does have some suggestions for the first weekend.
“Keeping those smaller ones, letting the bigger ones go. If you caught a walleye, regardless of the size, that was really plump and full of eggs, that’s a good one to let go and let her continue spawning and keep what appears to be obviously spawned out males.”
Pyzer notes the water temperature right now is peak walleye spawning temperatures.
The walleye season opens each year on the third Saturday in May.
Fishing is allowed under the current stay-at-home order, but anglers are asked to go out with family members only.
Bill Laidlaw of Signal Weather Services says the forecast is looking good for anglers.
He says it will be sunny with afternoon clouds with a high of 18 for opening day.
Sunday is calling for a high of 22 with clouds and occasional thundershowers.
