The Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation is the first to throw his name in the ring for the head of the Assembly of First Nations.
Alvin Fiddler was quick to declare as nominations opened Wednesday to replace outgoing Chief Perry Bellegarde.
Fiddler was elected Chief of NAN in 2015.
Fiddler states this is an opportunity to usher in a new era of generational change as well as make things better for all Indigenous children.
He says it’s time to transform their national organization so it can become a voice for all First Nation communities.
Fiddler adds he believes the AFN can unite for a better tomorrow and move forward together.
On his campaign page he says, “There is a long road ahead, but we must start down this path to dismantle the old colonial ways of being and create new realities, built by us and for us.”
The deadline to file nomination papers is June 2 and election day is July 7.
Perry Bellegarde announced last December that he would not seek re-election.
The 58 year old was elected as National Chief in December, 2014.
