Sioux Lookout OPP are recruiting volunteers to be part of their Auxiliary Policing Program.
The Auxiliary Policing Program is a group of fully trained, unpaid volunteers who work alongside OPP officers in various programs and campaigns.
“Auxiliary members are called to help with campaigns for public safety, traffic awareness, as well as community outreach programs, regular patrol with frontline officers,” explains Constable Andrea Degagne with the Sioux Lookout OPP. “They can also be called in to help with RIDE programs, the ‘Lock It Or Lose It’ campaigns, also marine and snow mobile patrol.”
Police are looking to add seven Sioux Lookout volunteers, two in Pickle Lake, two in North Caribou Lake First Nation and one in Wapekeka First Nation.
Degagne talks about some of the requirements.
“Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old and Canadian citizens or permanent resident. They have to have a secondary school diploma, a class G drivers license and standard First Aid and CPR training, as well as be able to pass a background check.”
Successful applicants must also complete a week long recruit training course to learn all the skills they need to be safe on the frontline with police, with additional training opportunities throughout the year.
“The Auxiliary Policing Program is a great way to make a difference in your community, passing along safety knowledge and information to your community members,” Constable Degagne continues. “You also get some really unique experiences with the OPP and it’s a good way to acquire training in safety skills.”
