Doug Ford says he isn’t passing the blame for how the pandemic has devastated long-term care homes.
The Premier is welcoming the final report from the Long-Term Care Commission which examines how the system failed those facilities during the first wave.
The document is being released today.
“As difficult as it may be, as hard as it might be to read, I fully welcome this report,” he notes.
Ford says he won’t blame previous governments for the flaws in the long-term care system.
“Because I’m your Premier today, and I don’t want them to look back in 20 years and say that we could have done more,” he says.
The Premier claims he will continue to work to upgrade care homes and fix the system. As of Thursday, the province had attributed 3,768 deaths in long-term care homes to COVID-19.
“Because what happened in our long-term care homes, it was tragic, and it was terrible, but most of all, it must never be allowed to happen again,” he says.
Ford also repeated he wants stricter border measures to stop more contagious variants of concern from entering the province. He adds that by the end of Friday, health officials expect 40% of Ontario adults will have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
