Flags will be at half-mast at many workplaces on International Day of Mourning to remember workers who have been killed, hurt or made seriously ill on the job.
Regional United Steel Workers spokesperson Herb Daniher says today (Wednesday) is also about raising awareness about safety, procedures and rules that protect workers, even in what he calls safety-conscious industries like mining.
“However, unfortunately, we still see occasions where people have unfortunate accidents or fatalities. The mine that we represent members at, there have been three fatalities,” he says.
He points out the statistics for workers who are hurt or killed on the job in Ontario are still “astronomical” despite the progress that’s been made.
Daniher says the last thing you want to have is somebody going to work, in any industry or occupation, and then getting carried out in a body bag at the end of the day, or missing a limb, or be exposed to some kind of industrial disease.
