The Northwestern Health Unit is growing concerned over the high number of COVID variant cases in our area.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says the Dryden and Kenora Health Hubs have seen the most number of variants and the highest rates of variant cases in the region.
She notes a few cases have also been recorded in the Sioux Lookout region.
Dr. Young Hoon stresses we are not immune to what has become an Ontario-wide problem.
“Over 90% of COVID-19 cases in the province are variants of concern. Which is way we are seeing the drastic increase in ICU admissions in Ontario. Variants of concern are present in our area and we have seen in parts of the province how serious and deadly they are.”
She says if you do have to travel outside the region, you should limit your interactions with people upon your return for 14 days and if possible self-isolate for two weeks.
Meantime, the province has added a couple of new groups to the COVID vaccination eligibility list.
Dr. Kit Young Hoon says people who are pregnant are now included in the highest risk category.
If you are in that category, you can now book an appointment by calling 1-833-943-3900.
She adds those with high risk health conditions, including obesity, various treatments including chemotherapy, and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, can now get the shot by visiting Northwestern Health Unit
