The Nishnawbe Aski Nation says on the surface the 2021 federal budget contains some encouraging measures.
In a series of Tweets, NAN says the fiscal document includes commitments to close socio-economic gaps for First Nations and supports communities during COVID-19 recovery.
Officials say they will be looking for a recovery framework plan to ensure their communities receive the investments they need.
NAN adds the budget contains commitments to Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls, transformation of health care, education, infrastructure and reconciliation that are welcome and needed.
First Nations are now waiting to hear details on how these will be funded and implemented in NAN communities.
Officials are also looking for details on long-term support and investments for mental health supports, including stable funding for their life-saving Choose Life program.
