The MPP for Kenora-Rainy River says our area is not out of the woods in the fight against COVID-19 and its variants.
That’s why Greg Rickford says a regional approach wasn’t considered when new province-wide restrictions were introduced last week.
“We will when we can. Right now, Kenora-Rainy River is in the ‘Red’ category on the framework and being red for Kenora-Rainy River, one might argue, is more serious then some of the communities that are in ‘Grey.'”
Rickford stresses the move was made to support the overwhelmed health care system.
The former nurse says, “We have four ventilator capacity beds out here in the Kenora region. If we get to 50 (cases), where we are at right now, that means one to one-and-a-half persons, if you will in statistical terms, are very likely to become clinically ill.”
Rickford says he’s confident that if we spend the next couple of weeks following the stay-at-home order, we should be able to lift some of the restrictions locally.
He notes residents have largely been compliant with the health and safety rules, noting a lot of the cases have come from other regions.
Rickford says he’s just as anxious as everyone else as he wants his kids back in school and return to some sort of normalcy.
