The Trudeau government must deliver a plan on safely and gradually reopening the Canadian economy in Monday’s federal budget.
That’s what Kenora MP Eric Melillo wants to see as he is calling for the release of data and science behind any recovery.
Melillo is also calling for the release of a responsible fiscal plan in the budget.
He says the government has been spending without an anchor for two years now.
“There’s no question we need targeted stimulus programs for those that need them, but we have to ensure the programs can be phased out as things are able to open back up and people get back to work.”
The Conservative member notes we can’t keep structural deficits over-and-over for future generations to be burdened by.
Melillo says he also wants to see specific support for northern Ontario.
“More targeted sector-specific support for the tourism industry. For the airlines, particularly a lot of smaller airlines that service northern communities in our riding, and the hospitality as well.”
Melillo stresses the tourism sector has been among the hardest hit since the pandemic started.
However, the Kenora MP is not holding out a lot of hope with today’s budget.
Melillo is worried there won’t be a plan to get out economy rolling again.
“Been holding this office for a couple of years now and have yet to see a budget which is incredibly troubling. We’re happy to see that it’s coming forward. I don’t suspect I will be happy to see the contents of it unfortunately because we badly need a plan from the government aside from the status quo.”
