What are your thoughts on using AI software to make new music from artists we’ve lost long ago? It’s a valid question these days, as computers are becoming more and more capable!
Welcome to the future! There’s now AI software that can help compose ‘new’ songs based off a catalogue of music that’s fed into the computer! An organization in Toronto called Over The Bridge is behind the project – called Lost Tapes of the 27 Club. The project was done in three steps: Music Input, AI Input, and Song Composition.
Music Input – they had an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm listen to isolated hooks, rhythms, melodies, and lyrics.
AI Input – the AI algorithm learned from the music, then generated a string of all-new hooks, rhythms, melodies, and lyrics.
Song Composition – an audio engineer took these AI-generated musical elements and composed the Lost Tapes of the 27 Club.
So technically, yes… the music isn’t new. And it’s not officially from any of the artists, but it sure is interesting to see what computers can come up with just by taking some input and filling in the gaps.
Amy Winehouse
The Doors
Jimi Hendrix
As always, I appreciate your thoughts! Let me know what you think about all of this.
Truthfully, this stuff is scary and could be very dangerous. Let’s keep the music-making to humans and leave the dead alone, as cool as it may be.
