After going almost a full week of single digit COVID-19 cases, we are once again in double figures.
The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting 14 new positives today.
Seven come from the Kenora Health Hub, 5 from the Sioux Lookout region, and two more in the Dryden area.
There are now 50 active cases including 27 in the Sioux Lookout area, 19 in the Kenora region and 4 in the Dryden Health Hub.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says, “In the Sioux Lookout area there’s a number of communities in that catchment area that are affected. In Sioux Lookout, the municipality itself, there has been quite a few number of cases. The general trend is that someone has traveled from outside the region or been in contact with someone outside the region.”
She adds, “On occasion, however, we do get some cases where they’ve not travelled and don’t appear to be linked to travel. So there is still a possibility of some local transmission happening in our catchment area.”
Young Hoon says it’s a similar situation in the Kenora Health Hub.
She notes in the cases it’s generally a couple of households and close contacts impacted.
Young Hoon adds variants of concern isn’t a current issue here right now with only 5 variant cases to date.
They were all spread among very close contacts with 3 in the Fort Frances area and 2 in the Dryden region.
Case numbers are going down in Thunder Bay.
Twenty new cases were recorded Friday and the active case count has dropped to 259.
Ontario is reporting 2,169 new COVID-19 cases and 12 more deaths.
