A warning from the Dryden Police Service to stay clear of thin ice, after an individual fell through near Government Dock.
Recently, police responded to a report of an individual falling through the ice, but they were able get out on their own without assistance.
Police urged the public to be careful around rivers, lakes and bodies of water especially after this week of fluctuating temperatures.
Ice Safety tips include:
- Always supervise children playing outside who may wander or want to play near rivers, ponds, creeks or ditches. A child can drown in less than two inches of water
- Cold water temperatures can prevent even strong swimmers from escaping once they’ve fallen through the ice.
- Watch your pets closely so they don’t venture near or onto thin ice.
- Wear proper floatation attire
- Don’t fish or snowmobile alone
- Tell someone about your plans and specifically where you are going
- Know the condition of the ice before you go out and take into consideration the recent changes the weather may have had on the ice
- Be suspicious of grey, dark or porous spots in the ice as they may be soft areas. Ice is generally strongest where it is hard and blue
- Carry a cellular phone with you to call for help in the event of an emergency
