I first heard about the legendary White Otter Castle in Thunder Bay, and ever since I’ve been enamoured with the magical location. Unfortunately for me, I haven’t had the opportunity to see it in person.. yet.
A three-story castle built on the shores of White Otter Lake, located between Atikokan and Ignace. “I put it up without any help whatever,” Jimmy McOuat said back in 1914. He used a block and tackle method to raise these logs to their place.
His grave remains on location, where he died in 1918. The castle was finished four years prior. Funding was just announced and the castle will be undergoing some refurbishing sometime this summer!
The $237,000 project will see the roof re-shingled, new handrails and much more with thanks to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.
Friends of White Otter Castle believe the site sees thousands of visitors every year. Hopefully I can add myself to that count sometime in the near future!
Have you ever been? If so, I’d love to hear about your experience!
