The Ford government is spending another $1.2 billion to help public hospitals respond and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says $696.6 million will be allocated to help cover deficits, with a focus on small, medium as well as specialty and rehabilitation hospitals.
Up to $572 million will go to all hospitals to address lost revenues such as diminished parking fees and reduced money from commercial activities.
Elliott admits facilities are facing significant strains due to their unique situations and the patient population they serve.
Elliott says, “Ontario hospitals have faced extraordinary challenges and our hospital workers have worked tirelessly to deliver exceptional care for patients and families across the province. Our work with Ontario’s hospitals does not stop today.”
Premier Doug Ford adds, “This funding will help hospitals strengthen their financial position and recover lost revenue due to the pandemic. So they can continue the incredible work they are doing now and once we’ve beaten this virus.”
Ford says by spending more money now, hospitals will be in a better position to address the next challenge of reducing surgical backlogs.
