After seeing all the beautiful photos of the green, blue, and yellow tinges in the sky, I decided I needed to try and chase down some Northern Lights myself! But it seems like my terrible luck continues… because I didn’t see any beautiful colours at all!
I was ready to go home after an hour of mild disappointment, but just as I was leaving the area, I spotted a comet fly across the sky! At least, that’s what it looked like at first glance.
Until more lights appeared over the horizon, following the first at a semi-slow pace. As you can probably imagine, I was genuinely confused and a little concerned.
Being the only one out there, I immediately thought they were ALIENS! But alas, wrong again.
It’s actually Elon Musk’s Starlink! Mind you the video above doesn’t accurately represent my personal experience – as the lights came floating up from the horizon instead of across.
So what is it? A bunch of super-expensive satellites orbiting the Earth to provide Satellite-based Internet to remote communities. Pikangikum and even parts of Red Lake have been granted beta-access to the service.
Pretty cool, but pretty unsettling when you see it for the first time.
The search for Northern Lights continues, but hey – I found the satellites!
