Statistics Canada is starting up another round of hiring for the newest census.
Canada’s census report is taken every five years and this year there will be over 30,000 jobs available.
Geoff Bowlby is the director-general responsible for census and population for Statistics Canada.
He says the primary goal of the census is to count the population and the areas it’s concentrated in, in order to plan.
“You need to have these statistics in order to plan, in order to have good numbers for things like where to place a hospital, where to place a police station and more recently it’s been used to distribute vaccines,” he said.
Bowlby says people will be hired across Canada to help enumerate for the 2021 census.
Bowlby says while the majority of Canadians or about 8 in 10 fill out their census online, another 10 per cent of the population will fill out a paper questionnaire.
In the case of the last 10 per cent, an enumerator will show up at the doorstep of those who have not filled out their census information to assist them.
“We have new procedures at the doorstep. Some of the thirty thousand people that I said that we need to hire are employees that will chase down people who haven’t responded to the census online or on a paper form. Knock on the door and say hey we need you to fill out your census,” said Bowlby
“And when we do that activity, we’ll be providing everybody who does that with masks or hand sanitiser, training to ensure that social distancing is in place.”
Bowlby says it’ll be hard for normally friendly Canadians to decline an invitation in while the information is filled out but he says StatsCan is insistent that it’ll take place at the doorstep outside in the fresh air, where enumerators will be wearing a mask.
“We do need lots of people and I encourage people to apply to our website. They go to census.gc.ca, ca you see a big button that says apply now and I encourage anyone who’s over the age of 18 and who can legally work in Canada to do so, it only takes a few minutes,” said Bowlby.
Hourly pay for the jobs will be roughly $18 an hour and close to $23 an hour for supervisory positions. Full and part-time positions are available.
