Kenora MP Eric Melillo is reiterating his support for law-abiding firearm owners.
Melillo says the Trudeau government has tabled a bill setting up a buyback program for the firearms they banned this past May, a move he says will prohibit the use, sale and importation of more than 1,500 makes and models of legally purchased firearms.
“Frustrating to see the Liberals doubling down on a failed policy. They’ve been trying a few different incarnations of this. We know that this is going to be a costly program. It’s going to do nothing but create more rules for law-abiding hunters and sport shooters.”
Melillo adds the legislation will do nothing to reduce crime.
“It’s doing nothing to combat the issues of illegal guns that are being smuggled into the country or acquired otherwise illegally.”
Melillo says the Liberals and NDP recently voted down a Conservative Private Member’s Bill that would have increased sentences for criminals caught with smuggled guns.
He notes, “Firearms are part of our traditional way of life in Northwestern Ontario, a part of the country the Liberals clearly don’t understand. I will always stand up for the rights of my constituents to own and use firearms.”
