Who says Canadians don’t get spicy every once in awhile? Sure, we might be nice and say sorry a lot, but we still have our fair share of uproar! This week, it’s all about Buttergate.
Apparently, our Canadian butter is harder than usual, with many complaining that theirs will not soften at room temperature. It all started on Twitter, when cook book author Julie Van Rosendaal poised the question:
Something is up with our butter supply, and I’m going to get to the bottom of it. Have you noticed it’s no longer soft at room temperature? Watery? Rubbery? pic.twitter.com/AblDzGiRQY

Thousands of Canadians joined in on the conversation, highlighting similar experiences with their butter woes. Many claim that the pandemic is the culprit, and the latest stats from Dairy Farmers of Canada can back that up – with butter demands rising to 12% this year. With increased production, some think that farmers are adding palm oil to the mix.
They have since responded to the complaints, “Palm products, including those derived from palm oil, can help provide energy to cows and no undesirable effects have been identified arising from its use in cows’ feed rations.” They (DFC) also made a commitment to investigating consumers claims, “a working group comprised of stakeholders and experts will assess current literature, gaps in data, and look into these issues.”
Yeah, definitely can’t tell at all that everyone is bored at home.
Butter hard, butter bad.
