The Ontario government is partnering with all 24 publicly assisted colleges, including Confederation College, to offer a Personal Support Worker training program starting in April.
Premier Doug Ford says they are spending $115 million to train 8,200 new PSW’s in long-term care and community-care settings.
Ford says this investment will improve the quality of life for our seniors and begin to correct the decades of neglect in the sector.
He calls it the one of the largest PSW recruitment and training drives ever in this countries history.
Support for additional PSW’s has been a demand from local health and education leaders for a number of months now.
The accelerated program is a tuition-free opportunity for 6,000 new students and is expected to take only six months to complete, rather than the typical eight months.
The program is scheduled to begin in April.
Ford adds nearly 2,200 students will be eligible to receive a $2,000 tuition grant to help them complete their studies, as well as a stipend to complete the clinical placement part of their training.
Students currently taking a related course will be able to apply for the grant.
