For Ignace Alumni Sabena Islam, curling isn’t just a sport, it’s become a lifestyle. Originally from Pakistan, her parents came to Northwestern Ontario more than 50 years ago with new opportunities and adventures in mind – curling included.
She was first introduced to the sport at the Ignace High-school, which quickly grew into bigger events like the Tim Hortons Briers and Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
You could say that Sabena’s experience with the Canadian sport has come full circle, “Now, more than 50 years after my parents came to Canada from Pakistan, I am working with the Winter Sports Federation to bring curling to Pakistan. I’m looking forward to sharing the sport our family loves with a new country and am excited to play a part in the curling stories of a new generation of curlers in Pakistan.”
Curling Day in Canada is coming up, and Canada’s favourite story will will win a trip to the 2022 Tim Hortons Brier!
“Curling has been an integral part of my life and I am thrilled to say it has become an integral part of my children’s lives as well. Bilal was yelling ‘hurry hard’ as a toddler and although Kaamraan took a detour through hockey, he found his way back to curling.”
Her story has already reached the top twelve – and voting continues until Saturday, February 27th at midnight. Read the full story and vote, here.
Overall, it’s a fantastic story showcasing the greatness of living in Northwestern Ontario, and the amazing people from here and far that live within it!
