While the coronavirus is still the predominate public health risk, we are also in the middle of the traditional flu season.
So far, there are no documented cases of the flu within the Northwestern Health Unit catchment area.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon is not surprised.
“We may still see flu but because of the COVID-19 prevention measures, flu rates are generally low.”
She adds vaccination rates are higher than they have been in past seasons.
“We also administered more vaccines than we normally do and also distributed vaccines to other partners this year more so than we normally do.”
Dr. Young Hoon is asking the public to not let their guard down stating “It still may occur. It’s still pretty early in the influenza season. It often doesn’t end until to the end of March/beginning of April.”
