The Mayor of Ignace is hoping to see expanded development in the community in 2021.
Penny Lucas says they have sold a number of municipal-owned properties and are now anticipating new commercial and residential developments.
She says the Planning and Development Department is looking forward to working with the buyers on developing these properties.
Lucas adds there will be a heavy emphasis on beautification efforts this year.
“Including the unveiling and installing of our new highway corridor banners created by Kim Richards. They are absolutely beautiful and everyone is going to really enjoy them.”
Lucas says staff will also be installing new benches and lighting throughout the community.
She adds the Township will be cleaning up and upgrading their walking paths, beaches and recreational facilities.
Included in the work is demolishing and removing unsightly an unsalvageable building, trailers and vehicles.
On the governing side of things Lucas says one priority is implementing their new Official Plan which is now in front of the provincial government for approval.
“Once the approval arrives this will allow the new Zoning By-law to be passed and going into effect. Leading the way for a 10-year Future Development Plan for our community. That will be ‘Ignace Investing in Ignace.'”
Lucas adds they will also be developing a Youth Engagement Strategy, a Municipal Modernization review and a Community Capacity study to plan for future growth.
As for capital work in 2021 Lucas says they have outlined two priorities.
“Council is currently working in partnership with the Kenora District Services Board for affordable housing options including a proposed 20 unit seniors housing facility in Ignace. Staff continue to work with the Silver Tops Seniors Centre, including grant opportunities, to expand services, programs and hall capacity.”
Lucas adds they will expand their work this year with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization on a potential underground repository in the area.
