If you live in the Ignace area, the township and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization want to hear from you.
Residents will have the opportunity to share how they want to receive future information from the township and the organization.
Petrina Taylor-Hertz with the Township of Ignace says the survey focuses on NWMO’s site selection process for a new repository site for Canada’s used nuclear fuel.
It also addresses the environmental, technical and socio-economic studies that will be initiated early this year.
“Ignace and another community are the ones that initially expressed interest in the project, and they initiated the site studies and activities. The survey is to gage awareness in the community about the project.”
Hertz explains there are several ways to complete the survey.
“The surveys will be mailed out this week, if not already. It’s available to do online, the paper version or you can actually do it over the phone.”
Hertz adds all options will be explained in package residents receive in the mail and you’re asked to complete the survey by February 26.
“Let us know, let the township know where you’re level of knowledge is on the NWMO and further prospect of the project in Ignace.”
The survey is being conducted by CCI Research, an independent Canadian research firm. They will provide the results of the survey and report to Council and the Community Liaison Committee in Ignace later in 2021.
The NWMO is tasked with implementing Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term storage of used nuclear fuel in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come in an area with informed and willing hosts.
