A grim moment in the fight against COVID-19 in the Northwestern Health Unit catchment area.
Officials are confirming the first COVID related death, an elderly individual who had the simultaneous presence of two or more diseases or medical conditions.
They say out of respect for the family of the deceased, no further information will be provided about the individual or exact location at this time.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says “On behalf of all of us at NWHU I would like to convey our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased,
Young Hoon adds “I am sorry we have such a tragic reminder of how dangerous COVID-19 is and how much we all need to take measures such as physical distancing, good hand hygiene, and wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces and when physical distancing is a challenge, while we continue to find other ways to support each other and our communities.”
The health unit says they will continue work with health care providers, hospitals and long-term care providers to minimize the impact of the virus in our communities.
