There’s no sign that the high demand for food at the Dryden Food Bank will slow down anytime soon.
Manager Al Huckaby talks about what their experiencing in our area for demand right now.
“Our numbers are increasing as we see the impacts of COVID-19 and how it’s affected us economically in the area. The demand for food is always there.”
A new report by Feed Ontario reveals 1 out of 2 food bank visitors are worried about facing eviction or defaulting on their mortgage in the next two to six months, with one of the main concerns lack of affordable housing across the province.
Huckaby explains COVID-19 has not helped, in addition to the challenges low income families and individuals are already facing every day.
“Affordable housing is always something we’re faced with in northwestern Ontario, in Dryden. The economic situation of how COVID has affected the ability for people to keep up on their rents and mortgages is real. To have to face the reality of having to either put food on the table or pay the bills is very difficult and creates stress. We are seeing that here also.”
The report also reveals that even prior to COVID-19 food bank use was on the rise, with more than 537 thousand people accessing a food bank, visiting more than 3.2 million times, in the year leading up to the pandemic.
At the same time, the Food Bank is expecting a busy holiday season, with the need for food to stay the same, if not increase.
Huckaby talks about donations and items they’re in need of.
“The great thing about our community is that they’re always here to help us through these moments and we’re witnessing that now as we’re coming into the holiday season. Any items that we an put into hampers that will make a Christmas meal, a holiday meal more festive for families it’s always a good thing. So whether that be ‘Stove Top Stuffing’ or any of those items like that.”
Another hot ticket item that the food bank always needs more of are fresh or canned fruits and vegetables.
With no in person concert this year due to COVID-19, Huckaby talks about a virtual Holiday Train will be online December 12.
“CP Rail has generously given us a cheque, they’re hoping can be matched up to 6 thousand dollars. We’re really blessed by that.”
Huckaby adds the community has always been supportive but especially through this challenging year.
