Brandon University is celebrating Dryden’s very own Rick Lindquist.
The BU Bobcats grad has been featured in an Alumni Spotlight.
Lindquist reflected on his time at the school, coaching and his personal battles.
He started by talking about his passion for the game of Hockey.
“Well I first got interested when I was 6 because that was 1967 and that was when the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup and that was my team.”
The Spotlight goes back to his time as Captain of the Kenora Thistles when they played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
In 1980-1981, Lindquist finished second in league scoring, was a First Team All-Star and won the MJHL’s Sportsmanship Award.
Lindquist went on to spend five years with the Brandon Bobcats Hockey program and his 190 career points puts him second on the all-time list.
He captured a title in 1983 and was a Conference All-Star in 1985.
Lindquist says his progression was slow and steady.
“It was quite a thing when I finally made the team and everything was fine and started to get into it. I had a little bit of a slow start but I mean there’s a lot of pride there.”
Lindquist returned to Dryden and became a coach with the Eagles High School Hockey program.
He took time to remember his time with the team and the coaching staff that guided the team to a provincial final with eventual Hall-of-Famer Chris Pronger.
“He (Pronger) didn’t lack confidence. He would try just about anything and anybody. You did not intimidate him at all which is sort of his legacy.”
Lindquist stepped away from the bench when he was offered a Principal’s job while teaching at Eagle Lake First Nation school.
The former principal and high school hockey coach also reflected on life lessons to battle through multiple sclerosis.
“Nobody has an easy go. That’s my view. Everybody has something. Everybody has their up’s and down’s. You just got to deal with them really the best that you can.”
To take the trip down memory lane with Brandon and the Eagles, Lindquist says “I can remember a lot of those goals. I can remember things like that. All the trips and everything else. It’s funny how it brings you back.”
