Heddle Shipyards in Thunder Bay is going to benefit from a new contract to build ship components.
Premier Doug Ford made the announcement at Heddle’s headquarters in Hamilton Thursday noting it is a long-term agreement with Vancouver-based shipyard Seaspan.
“They’ll be making tens of millions of dollars worth of these ship components creating highly skilled good-paying jobs not only here in Hamilton but as well in St. Catherines and the folks up in Thunder Bay,” proclaimed the premier.
He says the project will employ at least 50 workers, and create the potential for additional opportunities, such as supplying larger ship modules in the future.
Over the next ten years, the company will be the primary supplier for ladders, gratings, and handrails for two Joint Support Ships, and an Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel.
Ford added Heddle has also joined with Seaspan to bid on building polar icebreakers for the Canadian Coastguard.
