Daniel Garneau was the son of Son of Francis and Mary Garneau, of Dinorwic.
He enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg in November 1942.
Fred Garneau remembers the last time that he saw his older brother Daniel. Daniel was dressed in his army uniform and Daniel picked up Fred and his brother Francis in his arms, gave them a bear hug and whispered to them, “Don’t worry my little brothers, I’ll be back to take care of both of you.”
Daniel was transferred overseas in March 1943′
Six days after his 22nd birthday, he landed in Sicily 30 April 1943. Daniel was killed in action July 22 during the bloody battle to capture Leonforte, a ‘formitable’ town in the hills.
Fred remembers the devastation that his family felt upon learning of his death.
Daniel was the first person of Native descent from the Dryden region to be killed in active duty, as noted in the Dryden Observer.
Daniel Garneau rests in AGIRA CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY, SICILY
Agira was taken by the 1st Canadian Division on 28 July, just six days after Daniel was killed.
The site for the war cemetery was chosen in September for the burial of Canadians who had been killed in the Sicily campaign. Agira Canadian War Cemetery contains 491 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, including Dinorwic’s Daniel Garneau.
