An expert in Canada-US relations says it’ll be days before we know for certain who the next president will be.
Don Abelson, Director of the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government at Saint Francis Xavier University, says it comes down to each state’s regulations.
Abelson says that means we might not have a final result before Friday.
“It’s important to remember that every state has different rules for when ballots can be received. Some of them insist that they be received by election day, Nov. 3, others insist that they be postmarked by Nov. 3,” he says. “Given how close this election has become it’s critically important for all the states that are still in play to continue to go through the counting process, so the final tally is accurate.”
Abelson says votes from overseas military servicemen also need to be counted.
He says, after all of that, it could be drawn out even further by court challenges.
“Given how tight this race is, and what is at stake, I think we’re in for a number of days, if not weeks, before we actually know what’s happening.”
Abelson says Donald Trump has already said he will launch a lawsuit if Joe Biden is declared the winner.
