The Federal Conservatives have deemed the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway in northwestern Ontario as a top priority.
Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Andrew Scheer recently discussed the issue with Kenora MP Eric Melillo.
Both agreed that investments in connecting regional communities should be prioritized to promote economic and social development in Canada’s north.
Scheer says Melillo is a champion for this region and is already promoting important projects that will create opportunities and increase the quality of life for northerners.
“I was impressed by his passion and insightful ideas on how to get things built”, says Scheer.
The former Conservative leader says he will be working with Melillo to put forward an alternative infrastructure program.
Melillo says “If we want to unlock the potential of the North, investments in infrastructure is absolutely essential. Improved northern infrastructure is the first step if we want to open access to natural resources, expand our ability to get products to market, and lower the cost of living by making it easier to travel between communities and ship essential goods.”
Meantime, Eric Melillo has some added responsibilities.
He is joining the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs.
Melillo was named Conservative Shadow Minister for Northern Affairs and FedNor last month.
Melillo says food security, internet access, boil water advisories, and transportation are issues he would like to make progress on this session of Parliament.
In the previous session, he sat on the Standing Committee on Natural Resources.
