Standing up against sexual assault and taking back the night.
That’s what New Starts for Women in Red Lake will be doing Thursday night at Centennial Park.
Executive Director Jennifer Chamberlin explains what the event is about.
“Take Back the Night started back in the 1970’s as a way to bring awareness to sexual assaults happening to women. It’s an opportunity for us to gather together, to promote some social justice, women come out to do some marching and chanting. We do invite men to participate as fire keepers. It’s all about women reclaiming their power back, taking back the night and standing up towards injustices against women.”
Chamberlin adds Take Back the Night events are important for all women and allies to take part in, in all communities.
Take Back the Night is a global event that was started in the 70’s as a way to bring awareness to sexual assault against women.
Chamberlin says all Red Lakers are invited to come out and participate.
The Red Lake Women drum group will kick off the walk at 6:30 p.m in Centennial Park, followed by a bonfire.
The event will follow COVID-19 guidelines and organizers hope to see a good turnout of support.
