Elementary students in the Hockey Academy program at Keewatin Part Dist School’s won’t be hitting the ice this year.
Director of Education Sherri Lynn-Pharand says it was a tough decision, but the best decision for everyone’s health and safety.
“Contact sports are not allowed for the foreseeable future. We just feel at this point and time, that’s not within the guidelines of the Medical Officer of Health.”
High School students enrolled in the hockey program will get to participate this year.
However, the program will strictly focus on dry land and off ice skills, as it’s a credit bearing course.
All fall sports have been cancelled in line with provincial direction for co-curricular activities.
This will affect boys volleyball, girls basketball, cross country running and football.
The decision on winter and spring sports will be revisited in January, depending on what they know about the virus at that point.
Pharand says no contact intramural sports could start as early as October, if safety protocols are going well.
