Most of us should now be used to wearing a mask when being inside a public space across northwestern Ontario.
Dr. Gary Garber, an Infectious Prevention and Control Physician with Public Health Ontario, says the main role of a mask is to prevent the spread of the virus.
“This is particularly important because we know that individuals may carry the virus in the back of their throat for several days before they actually become symptomatic,” says Dr. Garber.
Masks have become more available in stores and online since the start of the pandemic as health officials learn more about their effectiveness.
Dr. Garber says whatever you wear should have multiple layers.
“Ideally, a mask should have three layers. Two layers may be adequate, depending on what you are doing. You don’t want plastic on your mask because plastic can prevent proper breathing.”
Dr. Garber says homemade masks are also acceptable but ensure they fit properly, covering both the nose and mouth.
He says some in cases masks have become a fashion statement with logos, different colours and sayings.
