The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is one Northern Ontario community that will receive FedNor funding in the latest announcement made on Friday.
Sioux Lookout Mayor, Doug Lawrance says the Municipality will get 975 thousand dollars to drive economic development and support various projects.
“The funding provided will allow us to upgrade and extend our infrastructure at our commercial development site at our airport and to over one hundred aces of municipally owned developmental land adjacent to the airport, at Big Wood Lake.”
Upgrades will include water and sewer infrastructure, building a hotel and conference center, apartment buildings and residential housing on the Big Wood Lake site.
Northern Ontario communities have taken an especially hard hit economically because of COVID-19.
Lawrance calls the funding a huge boost, in order to strengthen relationships with the remote First Nation communities Sioux Lookout serves.
“In our area the new normal will certainly include the continued growth and development of our community as a service hub for Northern First Nations as they also grow and develop.”
Lawrance explains while they have a population of 55 hundred people, they serve as a hub for 30 thousand people.
FedNor is contributing a total of 4 million dollars towards Northern Ontario communities economic development.
