Mop up efforts are underway in the Red Lake area following a dangerous wild fire near the community last week.
Five crews and four helicopters are extinguishing remaining hotspots in the interior of the fire.
Red Lake Mayor Fred Mota says crews are starting to leave the area as the fire is 100% contained.
“We’re going to try and get back to some what of a normal lifestyle. I know it’s going to take some time to adjust but Red Lake people are very resilient and we will get through this.”
Mota stresses the response from the region to host some 4,100 evacuees was a true Northwestern Ontario team effort.
In an interview with CKDR News, Mota thanked everyone from the bottom of his heart.
“We are so thankful with our municipal partners. Everybody involved in this effort. It was a huge effort.”
Mota adds “We know if the tables were turned we would definitely be here with open arms to help any community in need. We are just so thankful and appreciative of all the work that’s went into this. From volunteers, to municipal staff, to community organizations.”
